Monday the 23rd January 2012

Football is a sport which plays host to some of the world’s greatest sporting spectacles. It is a universal language which unites communities as well as people from contrasting backgrounds. Football boasts competitions that enthrals and captivates audiences around the globe, watching athletes who exude passion, talent, and desire. We’ve heard of The Premier League, the FA Cup, and the World Cup. Well, now we have The Little Lever Cluster Tournament!
The stage was set; 54 children, four primary schools, six teams, fifteen matches . . . one winner!
On Monday 23rd January, Active Families proudly held The Little Lever Cluster Tournament, inviting teams representing primary schools based in the Little Lever area to participate in our project’s first football tournament of the year.
With a highly sought after Bolton Wanderers medal (and bragging rights!) on the line, teams from; St Matthews, Mytham (who each entered two teams), Bowness, and St Teresa’s all competed in the friendliest of fashions in the name of having fun!
Each team played five matches, all of which were masterfully officiated by students from Little Lever High School whom were undertaking their ‘Junior Football Organisers’ award. The tournament was overseen by BWCT’s School of Football Manager, Steve Obertelli, who said;
“The tournament went brilliantly! The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and relished the chance to compete with their peers from neighbouring schools. The tournament was also a fantastic opportunity for the children to interact with one another as well as participate in fun physical activity which ties in with the goals of the Active Families project.”
The tournament was a closely contested affair with the eventual victors, St Teresa’s Primary School, winning all five of their matches to collect their deserved medals at the end.
Active Families would like to thank everyone who took part in the tournament, as well as the team’s teachers for escorting the children, Little Lever High School for hosting the event, and Little Lever’s Head of PE Ben Chadwick for accommodating Active Families for the afternoon.
