On Saturday 9th April the members of Ghosia Judo Club were invited along to the One Bolton Fixture to showcase their Judo skills in the FanZone prior to the Bolton Wanderers V West Ham game.
The judo team were led by British Judo Development Officer Dave Duffy who coached the young people on a number of judo techniques and also mixed the exhibition up with some fun games which the young people thoroughly enjoyed. Other youngsters in the FanZone were also encouraged to get involved giving some the opportunity to try judo for the first time.
The aim of the day was to showcase how Bolton Wanderers Football Club supports the great work being done by Bolton Wanderers Community Trust (BWCT), British Judo Association and Ghosia Judo Club raising sports participation in the area. This also demonstrates how BWCT support the One Bolton Initiative “celebrating all that's great about our borough, encouraging people from all backgrounds, beliefs and values to get together to enjoy events, cultural activities and to simply have fun”.
The history behind the Ghosia Judo Club
As part of the Premier League 4 Sport initiative Bolton Wanderers Community Trust (BWCT) ran judo sessions at Ghosia Community Centre which is part of the Ghosia Mosque. The aim was to engage with young Muslim people and raise sports participation levels amongst one of Sport England’s priority groups. It was also apparent that there was a lack of quality sports provision offered to the young people living in the Dobble area of Bolton, therefore we wanted to offer greater sporting opportunities for the young people to take advantage of.
The judo sessions became a great hit in the community with attendance increasing steadily and remaining high. Therefore to ensure we could sustain this great work and continue to provide these highly popular sessions, the team at BWCT, British Judo Association and Ghosia Community Centre came together to build a new judo club within Bolton.
