Community project see young Muslim women take on sport
Bolton Wanderers Community Trust recently launched a brand new community inclusion project with support from Sports England Sports Match Funding.
The programme was has been launched to encourage sports participation within the Muslim Community of Bolton targeting 7-16 year olds with a strong focus on women and girls involvement in sport.
The funding is not only allowing Muslim woman the opportunity to play sport, but also targeting local volunteers in the hope that by helping them through their coaching qualifications they will help the project grow into a long term sustainable project, that can be enjoyed by many Muslim woman of all ages.
“research conducted shows that Muslim woman are considerably less likely to take up exercise compared to other groups , therefore this is why it is important programmes targeting the Muslim woman are carried out and have clear exit routes”
The project is also providing promising youngsters with the opportunity to join local sports clubs and funding is being provided to assist with their long term development.
Premier League 4Sport (PL4s) Co-ordinator Nicol Meredith had this to say on the project “ it is fantastic to see so many young Muslim woman taking up the opportunity to get involved with sport, the programme not only allows them to participate but also provides them with a platform to develop their skills, with the close links the programme has with local Sports clubs.”
